Why it happens.
Packaged software encodes the average of its market. That is precisely why it is good value for the eighty percent of your operation that looks like everyone else's — and precisely why it fails on the part that doesn't. The mismatch isn't a gap in the product; it's the product working as designed on a business it wasn't designed for.
The expensive mistake is bending a product to cover that last twenty percent. Each customisation is individually defensible and collectively fatal: the system drifts further from anything the vendor supports, upgrades turn into projects, and you end up maintaining bespoke software anyway — without the benefit of having designed it.
